Tricks to Save Money When Shopping on Amazon

We all like saving money where we can, but did you know that you can save money when shopping with the biggest name in online shopping - Amazon? We’ve brought you some tips and tricks which will help you out when shopping those virtual aisles..

Get Your Money Back if The Price Drops (not widely known!)

Have you ever bought anything on Amazon and then seen that the price has reduced shortly after your purchase? This is where the Amazon price-change refund policy can help you out. This policy only applies when you buy direct from Amazon itself and enables you to get the price difference refunded if the price of the item drops within 7 days of your purchase. In order to do this you need to log into your account, click the ‘contact us’ button, then go through to the refund section and drop Amazon an email to let them know the price has dropped. They will then refund you the difference.

Free Kindle Books and DealsKindle

If you’ve got a kindle then Amazon is a great place to download free books. To find these, just type in ‘kindle freebies’ into the search box or head over to the ‘top 100 free’ section of the kindle store. Amazon also offer kindle daily deals where e-books will cost you as little as 99p. If you want to hear more about these savings then you can just sign up to the kindle daily deals newsletter and you will receive an email each day with the top e-book discounts.

Free Shipping Over £20

If you’re planning on making an order with Amazon, don’t forget to take advantage on free shipping over £20. This only applies on items bought directly from Amazon and not the marketplace.  If you can’t quite get your basket to hit £20, save the items to buy at a later date when you have other things to buy or use a filler item finder- you will find plenty of links on Google. This tool suggests items priced at the amount you need to bring your total to £20. You can then sort the results by different categories to find something of interest.

There are lots of shop-bots out there on the internet; these are virtual ‘robots’ that will compare prices across different retailers on your behalf to find you the best deal and the lowest prices. Use these before checking out to make sure you have definitely got the best deal available.  Some of the more respected ones around are NextTag, the MegaShopBot (from the well know Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert) and the original PriceGrabber.

Price Checker Plug-ins

There are many price trackers available for Amazon but the most popular appears to be CamelCamelCamel. Don’t assume that Amazon prices are the lowest available; often prices can be lower elsewhere. This price checker add on will show you a graph showing the Amazon price history, so you can make sure that discounted price is really worth it. This plugin can be installed on Firefox, Safari and Chrome and will display a notification whilst you are browsing of better deals if there are any.

Amazon Prime Free Trial

Amazon prime will get you unlimited free one day delivery and if you’ve never signed up to this before then you can get yourself a 1 month free trial of the service. The great thing is that you can sign up, put an order in and then cancel your subscription. This is great for around Christmas when you are putting lots of orders in. With Amazon Prime you will also benefit from watching unlimited movies and TV shows with Prime video, access over one million songs with Prime music, unlimited photo storage and early access to Amazon’s lightening deals. At a cost of £79 for a year (that’s just over £6.50 a month) it is definitely worth signing up for if you are a regular Amazon user and the Prime video can replace your Netflix subscription if you have one. If you only want to use the free trial, don’t forget to cancel after your one month is up or you will be charged.

Voucher Codes

Before buying anything on Amazon make sure you search for any current active voucher codes that could offer you a bit of discount. A simple Google search will bring up a list of discounts which will range from free delivery to 15% off a certain item or brand. It is worth having a look in case the item you are buying appears on a voucher page.

Amazon Marketplace

If you haven’t heard of Amazon marketplace then you need to consider it when shopping with Amazon as you can pick up some great deals. Items sold on the Books Pilemarketplace are fixed price and enables sellers to offer new and used items alongside Amazon’s regular products. You are then able to buy these items direct from third-party sellers, often at a reduced price. This is a great and safe way to shop. Amazon will take your payment and pass it to the seller, but will not forward any of your credit card information. This is a brilliant way to get cut-price products if you don’t mind that they might be second hand, a good example is books. They are often in good condition and quite frequently you can get products that are new. Sellers will specify this in their listing. Delivery charges for Marketplace items can vary, so be sure to factor this into your price when working out if it’s the cheaper option.

Today's Deals

If you head over to Amazon you will see a link at the top of the page titled ‘Today’s Deals’. These deals are only on for one day and if you’re lucky you can get yourself a real bargain. The deals page often features electronics such as laptops which can have up to 40% off the retail price. This link will also direct you to some great lightening deals on a range of products and will show a countdown timer for when the deal runs out. The page will also show you current sales, savings, voucher codes and Amazon local deals in your area.
