The average wedding dress costs over £1000 but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to that budget yourself. Read our tips to save money on your wedding dress if you do not want to spend a fortune on a garment you will only wear once.

Second Hand

When you think about the fact that you only wear your wedding dress once, buying second hand means the dress is still basically flawless but will cost you a lot less. Try out second hand stores, charity shops and local online auction and selling sites. Keep your eye out for dresses that have been professionally cleaned and stored correctly to retain its shape and colour. Budget for the fact that you may need to pay for slight tailoring and alterations if it’s not a perfect fit.

Custom Made

DIY DressFinding a local seamstress and having your dress custom made means you will only pay for the fabric, embellishments and the seamstress’ time rather than paying the overheads associated with someone selling dresses in a store. Try and find a dressmaker in your area who is willing to take on making your wedding gown. Ask to see the seamstress’ previous work to get a feel if they are talented enough to make what you are after and leave plenty of time, a hand made gown can take up to 6 months to complete.

Buy Online

It is also worth looking online to find the perfect gown for your big day. There will be the option of finding new and used dresses depending on your budget. Some dressmakers will list their designs online and you simply send over your measurements and the dress is then custom made for you and sent to you without ever having to attend a dress fitting. Try websites such as Etsy where people showcase their handmade goods. Even eBay has some great deals on dresses so check our eBay Bridal Dress page to find the perfect one. Be sure to check seller feedback before paying for a dress from a private seller and look for previous pictures. Order with plenty of time to make sure it arrives in good time.

Find Samples

Sample gowns are the dresses that are used and tried on in boutiques by brides to be so are hardly worn. Pop into some of your local boutiques to see if they have any sample dresses for sale. When purchasing a sample gown you purchase it exactly as it comes and will be responsible for any cleaning and alterations needed. Check that any minor imperfections can be altered and fixed and factor this into the price as some embellishments may need to be replaced. Another benefit of buying a sample gown is that you can take it away with you on the day, great for if you are on a tight schedule.

Go Simple

Less can often mean more but fewer embellishments on your dress does not mean it will cost more money. Choose a fuss free minimalistic classic gown and save yourself the cost of any additional work. You can always add embellishments to the whole look to go along with the dress afterwards by means of a tiara, sparkly jewellery or a coloured sash. This gorgeous sparkly necklace set is only £2.90!
