The Start: An Un-Easy Feeling...

I have heard a lot of people talking about muscle food and I have wanted to try them for a long time but i was always a bit dubious.  I like to see my meat and check the quality of it before purchasing it, so I was a bit worried about how this meat would turn out. I was also a bit uneasy on the fact it was delivered by a courier as opposed to a designated refrigerated van.

The Delivery

What was delivered in the boxSo the day came for my order to be delivered and I was very excited and nervous. The parcel was delivered via parcel force signed for parcel. The cardboard box had muscle food logos on it and perishable food notices over it. inside the box was a large insulated bag with the meat inside. There were ice blocks spread throughout the meats to keep the temperature down within the box. All of the products were very cold to touch but no freezer burns etc from the ice packs. Unfortunately one of my chicken packs had split and so there was juices over the other packets, but as they were all in vacuum packed bags or sealed packets I just rinsed all of the other packets and dried them off again. Products that did not need to be chilled, such as the chocolates, chocolate spread and spice rub were placed in the cardboard box but outside of the insulated bag. There was also a leaflet in the pack and some vouchers for reduced/free items on your next order as a result of referring a friend to make an order.

In the Pack

24x chicken breasts (in two packs of 12)
6 pack of large meatballs
2x 500g lean beef mince
2 pack of turkey hache steak
2pack of beef hache steak
2 pack of piri piri beef hache steak
6 pack of chicken sausages
2 pack of beef burgers
2 pack of lean diced beef
1 protein pizza
1 chocolate protein spread
6 pack of chocolate peanut butter cups
2 pack sirloin steaks
2 pack rump steaks
smoky seasoning mix

Chicken Breasts

The chicken came packaged in a large pack of 12, on first opening the pack i did think that the chicken had a smell to it and was unsure if it was possibly off. i decided to package the chicken into smaller bags of 2 breasts and put them in the fridge and let them settle for a few hours. i then checked them again and they had lost their smell and seemed fine. i think that as there were so many breasts in a deep bag there was a lot of juice all over the breasts and a smell had developed in the bag, perhaps a shallower tray where the breasts could be placed in one layer may be better than a bag where they are all piled ontop of each other. The chicken breasts were a very generous size and this did make me wonder whether a lot of water would come out when cooking but not at all. whether i cooked them in as diced chicken in the pan or a whole breast in the oven the meat was very moist and succulent. This was one of my favourite items and i would definitely stock my freezer with these.

Meatballsthe meatballs - before and after

now these were beasts of meatballs, they were huge, the type you get in a restaurant. i usually cook my meatballs in a frying pan but as these were so large i thought it would probably be better to cook them in the oven on a low heat to ensure they were coked through properly and equally, i checked the internal temperature with a meat thermometer to make sure they were perfect. there was a lot of oil expelled from the meatballs, but the finished cook left them moist and tender and my favourite spaghetti an meatballs to date.

Turkey Hache Steak

So I was a bit dubious about this one, I've never eaten turkey in any form other than at christmas in a roast or then in sandwiches. so to eat what was essentially minced turkey meat, I wasn't too confident in this being a nice and super tasty product. well i was entirely wrong, I used this in a burger bun along with sweet potato fries and a corn on cob. the steak was moist and juicy and packed with flavour. I cooked it just as i would a steak or burger, in a pan with a touch of spray oil and flipped it over every 2 minutes. I would definitely buy this again and even my 4 year old enjoyed it.

Beef Hache Steak with Smokey Seasoning Mix

so I was interested to see how this one would turn out, was it a burger, or was it a steak. As the steaks came in a duo pack I decided to use the smoky seasoning mix on one and a simple salt and pepper rub on the other. I cooked the steaks in a pan, flipping them every 2 minutes and aimed for a medium rare as I would on a normal steak. once they were cooked I served them with a side salad, mushroom and homemade chips. the steaks were very moist and had next to no fat expelled during the cooking process. the steak with the simple salt and pepper seasoning allowed the natural flavours in the meat to come through, but the steak with the seasoning mix was by far my favourite. the flavours were mouth watering and I would definitely keep a stock pile of that seasoning mix in my cupboard at all times.

Piri Piri Beef Hache Steak

Now this product I decided to give to my mum as my partner doesn't do well with any kind of spice or heat. my mum decided to cook these as burgers and use them in buns. they were lightly fried in a pan with salt and pepper rub, there was no fat produced during the cooking and they kept their shape and thickness throughout. The piri piri flavour was rich and flavourful but not spicy and would definitely make a repeat appearance on the menu.

Lean Beef Mincelean minced beef - before and after

I used the mince in a traditional spaghetti bolognese, there was very little fat released from the meat when frying and so little in fact that i didn't even need to drain the meat before adding the sauce. the meat tasted rich and beefy and a definite tick from us.

Chicken Sausages

Now again this is a product I have never tried before and to me a sausage is always pork, so another new experience. i decided to cook these in a chicken jambalaya and swap my usual chicken and sausage in the recipe for these chicken sausages. they kept their shape well and had the consistency of a normal sausage. there were no gristly bits which was good. I expected them to taste a bit grainy ad processed but they were not like this at all. It did take me a few bites to get my head around eating something that had the texture of a sausage but all the flavour of chicken but it was very pleasant.

Beef Burgers

So no guesses for what I cooked these as…burgers. I cooked them in a frying pan and was pleasantly surprised by how little fat was expelled. I served them in a bun with a bit of salad, some homemade wedges and corn on the cob. The flavour was deep and punchy, a very high quality burger, like one you would expect from a higher class restaurant.

Lean Diced Beeflean diced beef - before and after

I used this in a casserole with sliced potato onto and a side of cabbage. This was cooked on a low heat for about 3 hours in the oven. The meat just melted in your mouth, there was no tough chewy bits and yet it was still very flavourful.

Chocolate Protein Spread

Does what it ways on the tub with this one, it was a pleasant chocolate spread however it was a bit grainy and I do like a completely smooth spread so this product wasn't for me sadly.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Now this isn't something I was expecting from a company where only meat products spring to mind, but who doesn't get a smile on there face by surprise chocolates. One of my favourite chocolates are the truffle ones, those with mousey centres inside them. These chocolates had a hard shell with a rich mousse inside, the mousse had peanuts ground up in it so it tasted similar to a ferrero rocher with its textures, the chocolate was slightly bitter but I do like dark chocolate so I didn't mind that.

Sirloin Steakssirloin steaks - before and after

I served this with a side salad, homemade wedges and mushrooms. I put a simple rub of salt and pepper on both sides and pan fried them on each side at 2 minute flips to a medium rare finish. The meat was juicy and full of flavour, it just melted in your mouth. This would definitely be a regular product to be purchased.

Rump Steaks

These I gave to my mum so I could get her take on the steaks aswell. She cooked and served them in a similar way as I did. However she did say that they were a bit tough and chewy, but she does like her steak very well done so I have a strong feeling this is why her steak tasted the way it did.

The Overall BB4BM Verdict

 - 4/5 STARS - A THUMBS UP! -

I have to say that for an online food company I was very impressed. Obviously I wasn't going to be in love with all of the products - as at the end of the day everyone has different tastes. But there is no doubt that the quality of the items that you are buying - without being able to look at them first - is very high. I would definitely recommend this company to a friend and order from them myself in future. It's also given me the opportunity to try some new things that I probably would never have tried, and I think that we all have a tendency to fall into eating the same products week in and week out, so the variety boxes that muscle food offer are a great way of trying new things without worrying on the quality of what you're receiving.

The Overall BB4BM Verdict

 - 4/5 STARS - A THUMBS UP! -
There was a couple of issues with the finish or printing on some pieces, now these could have been items that had slipped through quality control and i am still more than happy to use the items and have them out for people to see, so therefore, my overall verdict is that these are good products and I would definitely order items produced by this company in the future. I would also recommend this company to a friend if they were looking for an item such as the ones this company produces.
